  4. Copper percentage of the alloy. More copper at an already-exposed surface supplies more metal for the salts. Intact lacquer on a high-copper jewellery bronze stains less than a worn 70/30 ring.
  5. Starting plating thickness and starting coating thickness. They set how much barrier you bought.
  6. True contact allergy. The green washes. A rash is a clinician’s reading, often of nickel in an underplate.

How much copper and zinc are in jewellery brass?

Jewellery brass is a copper-zinc alloy whose copper share is fixed by mill specifications.

The Copper Development Association’s profile for C26000, cartridge brass, sets copper at 68.5 to 71.5 percent, lead at 0.07 percent maximum, iron at 0.05 percent maximum, and zinc as the remainder, 99.7 percent minimum for copper plus named elements. Nominal composition is 70 percent copper, 30 percent zinc. ASTM B36/B36M uses the same copper range. The association lists costume jewellery and watch parts among typical uses.

C27000 is specified at 63.0 to 68.5 percent copper. C22600, ASTM B36 jewellery bronze, sits at 86.0 to 89.0 percent. If you have been told that all brass is 70/30, that row is the residue.

Lead on C26000 is a machining addition. The green tracks copper, and that percentage only starts to matter once the surface the skin touches is the alloy itself.

What chemistry makes the green, and how is wear tested?

Copper at the surface oxidises in a wet, chloride-rich film and forms green copper salts that transfer onto the skin. Sweat supplies the chloride, the water, and the acid.

ISO 3160-2’s synthetic perspiration is the laboratory version of that film: 20 grams per litre sodium chloride, 17.5 grams per litre ammonium chloride, 5 grams per litre urea, 2.5 grams per litre acetic acid, and 15 grams per litre lactic acid, brought to pH 4.7 with sodium hydroxide. The watch-covering test holds the sample at 40 °C for 24 hours. After those 24 hours, the 1982 porosity clause fails any sample that shows green droplets or green deposits on the significant surface, judged by the naked eye.

I would not paste the Statue of Liberty onto that finger. National Park Service classroom material dates the statue’s shift from copper-brown to green at about 25 to 30 years. X-ray diffraction work for the restoration, published by Matyi and Baboian in Powder Diffraction, found the outdoor patina to be mainly brochantite, a basic copper sulfate. Harbor air is a sulfate story. Skin is a chloride story.

Tarnish on the jewellery is the metal’s own surface changing colour. The green on you is salt that left the metal.

How thick is gold plating or a clear coating?

16 CFR 23.3 sets the floor for calling a product gold plate, gold plated, gold electroplate, or gold electroplated at a minimum thickness throughout equivalent to 0.175 microns of fine gold, from an alloy of at least 10 karat, applied electrolytically to all significant surfaces. How do copper and gold-plated brass compare on the skin?

I treat gold-plated brass as a dated sequence. Day zero: gold colour, no stain. Later: brass at the inner face, green on the skin. The barrier ended.

Is the green mark an allergy, and what do patch tests show?

A green stain without itch, swelling, or a spreading rash is a salt deposit. Allergic contact dermatitis is a delayed reaction read from a patch test.

If the finger is green and quiet, I photograph the stain and the inner band. If it is red or itchy, that sequence goes to a clinician.

  3. Inspect the contact face. Bare yellow metal, a gold film worn to a bright line, or a chipped clear coat tells you the barrier has failed.
  4. Keep the piece dry, put a fresh barrier on the contact face, or stop wearing it on that skin. A new e-coat in the 5 to 10 micron jewellery band, or heavy gold electroplate at 2.5 microns, delays the next stain. Neither converts C26000 into gold.
